The TeamKids Beach House
“No one can ever take our memories away. It means so much to us to be able to remember her – not in hospital or even a home – but on the few precious holidays we had by the ocean. She was so happy there. We all were.” Kirsteen Calder (mother of Georgia and Chelsea). Pictured right.
The Paediatric Palliative Care team at the Women's and Chidlren's Hospital looks after families who are living with a diagnosis which will mean a short life for their child. In the face of such sadness these families bravely live the best days possible with their child and their siblings.
What better way to make the most of this time than with a family holiday at the beach?
The Women's & Children's Hospital Foundation wants to build a loving, life-celebrating sanctuary at Encounter Lakes in Victor Harbor which will welcome families who are caring around-the-clock for children suffering long term and life limiting illnesses. It will be a place of comfort, peacefulness and practicality, so that they can pack a simple suitcase and go.
Inside this beautiful home with all the equipment and disability support tools and resources they need as well as a whole system of support such as meals, access to activities and medical help. We also want to hold families gently in their grief when their child has died by making the Beach House available for them to find a place of privacy and healing.
Recently, the WCH Foundation purchased two adjacent blocks of land at Encounter Lakes and the next phase of this exciting project will be to consult with an architect, builders, hospital staff and families to design a house that will meet the specific medical needs of children with a life limiting or long term illness and their families.

Among key considerations are wheelchair access, door widths to cater for mobility aids and equipment, an oxygen supply, patient lifting systems, climate control and storage for special needs equipment. The fully furnished, medically equipped and landscaped TeamKids Beach House will provide a peaceful place where families can take a much needed break to share special experiences that will last a lifetime.
The WCH Foundations goal is to raise $1.55M over the next 18 months to complete the final phases of the Beach House project from construction right through to adding the final furnishings and amenities.
